Chapter 11

When the third movie started, I couldn’t take it anymore. These three were terrible at picking movies. I hadn’t spent a day watching movies in a long time, and I was having trouble paying attention. All I was thinking about was Jett and what he was thinking about me. I needed to know, and I was going to ask.

“I’m going for a walk,” I told them. “My legs need to stretch.” I put my coat on and walked to the sheriff’s office. The sun was beginning to set, so he might have gone home. When I was almost there, I paused. I thought I saw something from the corner of my eye go over the building.

I walked around the building with my eyes on the roof. On the backside of the roof, a figure in black was on their hands and knees, dumping something into a vent. I frowned. That couldn’t be good. Someone had positioned a ladder next to the building. I grabbed it and laid it down flat, then I hurried around the corner to the front door.

There was no telling what the person was dumping into the office, so I took a deep breath and entered. Jane wasn’t there, so I rushed into Jett’s office. His elbows sat on his desk, and he rested his head in his hands. I wasn’t good at holding my breath, and I was going to have to breathe soon.

Grabbing Jett’s arm, I pulled. He looked up, his eyes not quite focused. After another tug, he stood. I pulled him out of the room and outside away from the office. I took a deep breath, and he fell to his knees.

He blinked. “What are you doing, Ivy? I’m so tired.”

“Someone is on the office roof. He was pouring something into a vent.”

“Okay. I’ll rest for a minute and then deal with it.”

I took a deep breath. I stood and ran back around the building. The person in black was hanging from the roof, about to drop. His feet dangled five feet above the ground. As soon as he let go, I charged forward. He landed in a squat, and as soon as he stood, I plowed into him, taking us both down to the hard snow. I grabbed his mask and ripped it off. Noah stared up at me. Not a surprise.

“Get off!” he yelled. He shoved me onto the ground, and I jumped up. He tried to stand, and I kicked him in the chest, knocking him back to the ground. Jett staggered around the corner and looked confused. He pulled his gun out and aimed it at Noah. I wasn’t sure how able Jett was, so I watched Noah closely and moved farther away.

Noah raised his arms and glared. “Selling a few drugs doesn’t hurt anyone!” he said. “I don’t see why you couldn’t just mind your businesses. I need that money!”

“Do you really think we left those drugs inside the sheriff’s office for you to come grab?” Jett asked.
